Need a Break? Moab Utah Is the Perfect Destination

Moab is a beautiful modest city located in the eastern part of Utah in the western United States. The tiny eastern city was said to have had a population of about 5235 people three years ago which grew from a census report that indicated its population to be 5,046 back in 2010.

The interesting mountainous terrain associated with the city is an attraction to many mostly bikers who frequent the place to explore its extensive network of bike trails such as the slick rock trail. Off-roaders also love to explore the city’s landscape and are frequent visitors during the city’s annual Moab jeep safari. The beautiful town has quite a bit of a history dating back to medieval times.

The name Moab has caused a notable difference of opinion and divergent arguments amongst historians. Some believe the name originated from Paiute beliefs, with the name Moab being derived from the term Moapa which refers to mosquitoes. Others are from the school of thought of the city’s first postmaster William Andrew Pearce who believed that the name had biblical and therefore sacred origins.

In the 19th century, a number of religious folks made efforts to have the city’s name changed, citing biblical accounts of ancient Moabites being idolatrous and incestuous. The bid gathered more pace in 1890, where 59 signatures were appended seeking to have the name changed from Moab to “Vina”. Another bid followed soon after seeking to change the name to “Uvadalia”. Both attempts hit the wall and the name remained as it is today. The city’s early explorers had to deal with a series of Native American attacks, with mission men such as James Hunt getting fatally shot by Native Americans in 1855. New settlers, however, forced their way into the area and set up a permanent settlement in 1878, which later led to the rise of the town.

Moab was later recognized as a town official in 1902. Apart from the interesting history behind the tiny eastern city, the place is always known for fine getaway weather. The summers are quite hot and nice if you are looking for that tropical feel while the winters are quite chilly necessitating a mug of hot chocolate. Temperatures can go as high as 46 degrees Celsius while the lowest temperatures can fall to -31 degrees Celsius. These temperatures are comparable to most tropical places making Moab Utah quite the place to be if you are looking for a great getaway.
